Barbara Wallis
As a counsellor I'm particularly interested in self-esteem and identity and how we perceive ourselves in the world - I believe we all have capacity for personal growth and self development. Learning to tap into our potential can help us feel more comfortable in ourselves, and more confident to make changes.
What prompts someone to come to counselling? Often it's anxiety, whether stemming from work or home life, which is impacting on day to day living and relationships, making it difficult to see a way forward - and sometimes this can descend into depression. Taking time to look more closely at past experience, the ways one usually reacts, and possible options for change can often be enough to feel less stuck and find new motivation.
My priority in counselling is to help you look at your concerns, at your pace.
Alongside my private counselling practice I work in the NHS in career support, GP training, performance coaching and, most recently, coaching supervision. A large part of my work involves running workshops on areas such as: career planning, CVs, applications and interviews, coaching skills, how personality affects communication, and transactional relationships.
Over the past few years I've become increasingly drawn to Mindfulness, experiencing how it can help with wellbeing and contentment - I facilitate on our Mindfulness courses. I'm a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), working towards accreditation with BACP.
